The nationally ranked Fort Hays State Tigers take on the Emporia State Hornets on Saturday, October 28th. The game will be held at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays, Kansas with tailgating starting at 10:00 am and kick off at 2:00 pm. This will be the 91st overall meeting between the two teams, and the 60th consecutive year that they’ve met on the gridiron, beginning back in 1958. The Tigers are looking to hold on to their undefeated season.
The Hornets have a 4-4 record, but they’re a tougher team than what they appear on record. From the losses they’ve suffered, only one was a blowout, coming from the #1 team in the nation, Northwest Missouri State University (0-34). The other three losses have been much closer, losing to the University of Central Missouri (31-37), the University of Central Oklahoma (52-53), and Pittsburg State University (10-27). Their four wins include the University of Nebraska at Kearney (45-13), Missouri Southern State University (36-29), Northeastern State University (44-7), and Lindenwood University (41-30).
Emporia State leads the MIAA in passing and are second in overall offense for the conference. Not only that, they’re also ranked #10 in passing and #18 in total offense in the nation. Overall, they’re a team that likes to pass the ball a lot and a team that can rack up points in a hurry. They’re coming off a loss to Pittsburg State last week in a game that had to be finished on Sunday due to the weather.
Fort Hays State, on the other hand, is undefeated so far on the season. They’re ranked #7 in the nation, with a powerful defense that is #9 in the nation in rushing defense and #12 in scoring defense. Also, the Tigers have an impressive running back, Kenneth Iheme, who is leading the MIAA with 110.4 yards per game rushing.
