Don’t like Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump? There are plenty that of people that don’t. Luckily, there are alternative candidates whom you can cast your vote for. The problem is, most people don’t know who these alternatives are or what they believe in. Don’t worry folks, I’m here to help. Here is a breakdown of the alternative candidates, Jill Stein and Gary Johnson, and what they stand for.

JillDr. Jill Stein is the Green Party candidate. She graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1979. As a physician, she started to notice the effect the environment had on people’s health and became an advocate for a healthy environment as a human right. She worked as an instructor at Harvard Medical School from 1982-2006 and wrote many books during that time. In 2002 she joined the Green Party and has been running for offices ever since. Her main focus is to save our environment and to help those in poverty gain basic human rights.

After college he started a construction business that became one of the biggest construction companies in New Mexico and he employed more than a thousand people. In 1994 he ran for governor of New Mexico and won. During his tenure he got the nickname “Governor Veto” having vetoed more than 750 bills while in office. His state was one of four states to have a balanced budget when he left office in 2003. The main issues that Gary Johnson focuses on are limiting the power of government, giving people more freedom, and lowering taxes.

Why should you care?

If either of these candidates can gain support of at least 15 percent of the national electorate, they would then be able to participate in the upcoming televised presidential debates which are seen by tens of millions of Americans.  That could mean a huge shift in the political climate and the opportunity for a third party to emerge into the mainstream.

On the other hand, Gary Johnson fully supports gun rights to every citizen. It’s in the constitution and Johnson doesn’t agree with adding any more government control.

Gary Johnson believes in keeping the environment safe by some regulations but does not believe that the government should be “manipulating the energy marketplace” by giving funding to green energy corporations.

Both candidates support a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants living in the United States.

Both candidates agree that we need to shrink the size of our military and our involvement in other countries. However, Jill Stein is a little more progressive on this front as she wants to reduce military spending by at least 50 percent overall.
